MARKET OUTLOOK: A NEW BEGINNING
There is always a lot going on in global markets, but these days the situation seems to be amped up to 11.
Inflation remains a worldwide issue, with central banks around the globe approaching the fight against higher prices with the classic attack of raising interest rates. In the grand scheme of things, this is like taking a knife to a gunfight given so much of the inflation problem has been created by a short supply of key commodities.
Among these are most grain and oilseed commodities, a problem created by years of adverse weather around the world. Then there’s the issue of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine which has reshuffled not only the global grain supply and demand deck but also energies. No amount of interest rate hikes will solve this problem. How do all these pieces fit together, and go along with the turmoil in global investment markets? There are a lot of moving parts to talk about.
MARKET RULES
Over the last 3.5 decades I’ve looked at the markets from almost every direction possible. What started out as a quest to answer the question “What did we know beforehand with Black Monday 1987” has resulted in me boiling the study of markets, all markets down to 7 simple rules and approximately 60 underlying principles. I use these in my commentary and analysis every day to help others make sense of what is going on. There are stories behind each of the rules and principles (e.g. Newsom’s Market Rule #6: Fundamentals win in the end and a memorable job interview at a roadside restaurant), and I use them to make the session both informative and entertaining. The key is for attendees to leave with a better understanding of markets and the noise so much of the industry makes.
